      PolioPlus Updates 2002

Three million children targeted in Angola NIDs

Angola launched a three-day door-to-door campaign to vaccinate three million children under age five against polio on 21 June.  Some 30,000 volunteers,
including 7,000 girl and boy scouts and Rotarians, helped to ensure that hundreds of thousands of children were immunized, especially in parts of
the country that have become accessible after the end of 25 years of civil war in April.

The southern African nation is one of 10 countries in the world in which the wild poliovirus is still present.  UNICEF officials in Luanda, the Angolan capital, reported that mobilizers went through residential neighborhoods and schools, spreading the word about National Immunization Days.

This year, UNICEF has provided 17 million polio vaccines to Angola's ministry of health, along with storage equipment.  The organization has also
contributed technical support for the NIDs and helped with the design and sponsorship of public service announcements disseminated mainly through
      radio programs.

The Rotary Foundation has contributed more than US$2.7 million toward polio eradication in Angola through the PolioPlus program.  In addition, the
Foundation has contributed more than $3.8 million through PolioPlus Partners for surveillance and NID projects since 1998.  PolioPlus Partners has
contributed more than half a million dollars for Angolan Rotarians to pay for publicity and social mobilization items such as T-shirts, posters, banners, and media ads during all rounds of NIDs this year.
