PolioPlus Updates 2002 Polio Eradication Fundraising Campaign to be launched in June The new Polio Eradication Fundraising Campaign that was announced at the International Assembly this past January will be officially launched in June at RI's 93rd annual Convention in Barcelona, Spain. Introduced through a unanimous resolution of the RI Board of Directors and The Rotary Foundation Trustees, the one-year effort, named "Fulfilling Our Promise: Eradicate Polio," is aimed at raising US$80 million to help fill the US$400 million funding gap that threatens to snuff Rotary's dream of a polio-free world. Beginning 1 July 2002, Rotary's more than 30,000 clubs will be asked to provide cash and pledges—in addition to their Annual Programs Fund contributions—toward meeting the goal of the campaign scheduled to run only through the 2002-03 Rotary year. Past RI General Secretary Herb Pigman is director
of the campaign, and Past RI President Luis Giay is chair of the International

Rotary will use $25 million of the funds raised through
the new polio-eradication campaign to leverage matching funds from the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank. The Gates Foundation
will match the Rotary funds dollar for dollar, and the World Bank will

The Polio Eradication Private Sector Initiative, a joint effort of Rotary and the United Nations Foundation to seek major gifts from corporations, philanthropists, and foundations, will continue operating through 2002. The private sector initiative, now directed by Past District Governor Jack Blane, has resulted in more than $112 million in commitments from across the world. The PolioPlus section will provide more details, including
answers to frequently asked questions about the new fundraising campaign.
A six-minute campaign video and PowerPoint presentation materials
will also be made available for use by coordinators of the effort.
